Today we are reading: The Grin King at his Mountain/ Being the Accounts, Poems, Disquistions and Play of the One: the nature of surrealist orrception.
Yep it’s a long title but Anthony Sallis and Michael Kelly’s 1974 book contains some good poetry and cool art by Kelly and Michelle Fabok.
Produced in the days when folks still shot their brains onto paper its a cool cultural artefact from a different time. This centerfold is particularly ‘groovy’:
It’s a bit trippy at times eg: ‘Can you blame the boy for trying to break his clowns and germinate’ (Tryptic), but it’s not so far out you have to call it on the mobile to come in for dinner.
The artwork in particular reminds me of the cool surrealist pencil drawings my father used to make before he disbanded his prog rock outfit ‘Flaming firelight experience’ so he could focus on his true passions: Calculus and parsnip farming.
As the book is self published there is not much info about the author’s, but the text is a sleek mix of existential poetry and philosophical musings. Worth picking up, worth the read.
